The problem

Step 1
Clean and dry
Swept and cleaned the deck, then waited for it to dry through so the stain penetrates instead of sitting on damp fiber.
Step 2
Set and sand fasteners
Reset raised screws and sanded rough grain and splinters so the finish lays flat.
Step 3
Mask railings and siding
Protected posts, railing and adjacent siding from splash and overspray.
Step 4
Stain board by board
Applied penetrating stain along full board runs, finishing each board end to end to avoid lap marks.
Step 5
Back-brush and detail
Back-brushed edges, gaps and railing detail so no bare seam gets missed.
