Interior Door Trim & Hang
New door cut to fit, planed and hung square
Fitting a replacement interior door to an out-of-square opening: measuring, trimming the slab, ripping jamb stock and hanging the door so it swings and latches cleanly.

The job
An older opening that was out of square by enough that a stock replacement slab wouldn't close. We measured the opening at three heights, scribed and trimmed the slab, ripped jamb and stop stock to width on the table saw, then mortised the hinges and hung the door so the reveals are even and it latches on the first try.

The problem
A replacement door slab that was too tall for an older, slightly out-of-square opening and would not close without binding.
Our recommendation
Fit the door to the opening rather than forcing a stock slab: scribe, trim and rip custom stop so the reveal stays consistent even in an out-of-square frame.
The result
A door with even reveals all the way around that swings smoothly and latches on the first try.
Scope of work
What we did
Process
How we approached it
Step 1
Measure at three points
Checked the opening width and height at top, middle and bottom to find exactly how far out of square it sits.
Step 2
Scribe and trim the slab
Marked the cut line and trimmed the door with a circular saw and a straightedge, scoring first to avoid tear-out on the finish face.
Step 3
Rip jamb and stop stock
Ripped jamb and stop material to width on the table saw so the stop follows the door, not the wall.
Step 4
Mortise hinges and hang
Cut the hinge mortises, hung the slab and shimmed the jamb plumb before fastening.
Step 5
Set hardware and adjust
Installed the handleset and strike, then adjusted the stop and reveals until the door closed clean and stayed put.
