The job

A cramped, dated bathroom taken back to studs at the surround and rebuilt with large-format marble-look tile from the shower walls through to the floor. The built-in bench and continuous tile lines make the room read larger, and fewer grout joints means far less to scrub.

The problem

A dated, cramped bathroom with a worn tub surround and tired vanity that needed a brighter, easier-to-clean layout.

Our recommendation

Large-format tile with a waterproofed substrate and a built-in bench, carried onto the floor so the eye follows one continuous material instead of stopping at the curb.

The result

A bright, low-maintenance bathroom with continuous tile lines from the shower to the floor and tight, even grout joints.

Scope of work

What we did

Demo the old surround and flooring
Waterproof and set large-format wall tile
Build and tile a curbless shower bench
Lay matching marble-look floor tile
Install vanity, mirror, fixtures and trim

Process

How we approached it

  1. Step 1

    Demo and haul

Removed the old surround, flooring and vanity and hauled the debris off site.

  2. Step 2

    Waterproof the wet area

Built and waterproofed the substrate so the assembly is sealed behind the tile, not just at the grout.

  3. Step 3

    Set large-format wall tile

Back-buttered and set the wall tile with full coverage, keeping the layout balanced corner to corner.

  4. Step 4

    Build and tile the bench

Framed, waterproofed and tiled the shower bench with a slight slope so water drains instead of pooling.

  5. Step 5

    Floor tile, grout and trim-out

Laid the matching floor tile, grouted tight and even, then set the vanity, mirror, fixtures and trim.
